Want to boost the relevance and immediacy of your ocean science lessons?

Real time data from ocean observing systems in the Chesapeake Bay and beyond will put you on the crest of this technological wave!

Science teachers from the Chesapeake Bay watershed were invited to join a unique new network of teachers, scientists, and students for a two-year project tapping the educational potential of CBIBS (the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System).

Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) researchers and VIMS/Virginia Sea Grant educators teamed up with the NOAA Chespeake Bay Program, Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia, Old Dominion University, the Chesapeake Bay Observing System and the Rutgers University Coastal Ocean Observation Lab to offer this field, classroom and laboratory professional development opportunity. We covered coastal ocean observing systems, real-time data, and classroom integration strategies. Teachers took home information, multimedia resources and knowledge to conduct a monitoring project with their students.

Registration was limited to twelve science teachers, grades 9-12, from the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Institute Highlights
VIMS R/V Pelican

  • Informational sessions on coastal ocean observing systems
  • Observing system field work aboard a VIMS research vessel
  • Hands-on laboratories
  • Monitoring equipment for classroom use
  • Training and support for classroom implementation
  • Class and field activities correlated with Virginia Standards of Learning
  • Facilitated group discussion on classroom implementation of ocean observing system, real-time, and water quality monitoring data

Water Quality Monitoring ProjectUsing a refractometer

  • Collecting and analyzing data using equipment provided by the project
  • Sharing and comparing data among participating classes via the project website
  • Using and interpreting relevant CBIBS data

What Project Participants Will Receive

Teachers received travel support for Institutes and instruction, equipment and supplies, including GPS, refractometer, secchi disk, data loggers and digital pH and conductivity meters.

Teachers who successfully completed the requirements for each year of the project received a stipend to cover any costs the teacher incurred throughout the project.

Requirements

  • Arrange for access to a suitable water monitoring site
  • Compete both the four-day Institute in 2007 and a second Institute in 2008 bringing a "buddy teacher " from their school/district
  • Conduct student water monitoring projects and submit data in both 2007 and 2008 (in conjunction with buddy teacher)
  • Integrate ocean observing systems and real time data into their existing curriculum
