TAUTOG
Tautog
  • Approximately 91% of tautog recaptured in 1999 were recaptured at the same sites where these fish were originally released.  Significant examples include:
  1. Cape Henry Wreck
47 recapture events for tautog tagged at this site between 11/98 and 11/99 occurred in 1999, of which 46 events (98%) involved tautog recaptured at this site between 10-90 DAL (24 events) and 138-361 DAL (22 events).
  2. Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Islands and Vicinity
54 recapture events for tautog tagged and released at these sites between 6/98 and 11/99 occurred in 1999, of which 51 events (94%) involved tautog recaptured in this vicinity between 2-46 DAL (19 events), 159-303 DAL (17 events), and 362-692 DAL (15 events).
  3. Off Cape Charles, VA
63 recapture events for tautog tagged and released at several sites off Cape Charles harbor between 12/97 and 10/99 occurred in 1999, of which 57 events (90%) involved tautog recaptured within 3 nm from sites where fish were originally released.  Of these events, 42 occurred between 0-174 DAL, 13 occurred between 211-382 DAL, and two events occurred after more than 2 years (682, 737 DAL).
  4. New Point Comfort Rockpile
46 recapture events for tautog tagged and released at this site in Mar-Apr 1999 and Sep-Oct 1999 occurred in 1999, of which all recapture events with known recapture locations occurred at this site between 1-63 DAL (18 events) and 165-232 DAL (19 events).
  5. Westmoreland Wreck
36 recapture events for tautog tagged and released at this site between Mar-May 1999 occurred in 1999, of which 32 events (89%) involved tautog recaptured at this site between 9-74 DAL (30 events), 127, or 192 DAL.
  • Approximately 5% of tautog recaptured in 1999 were caught at sites less than 10 nm away from sites where these fish were tagged and released.  Significant examples include:
  1. Back River Artificial Reef
A tautog (12.50” TL) released here on 10/30/99 was recaptured at Fort Wool on 12/4/99 (35 DAL).
  2. Cape Henry Wreck
A tautog (13.75” TL) released here on 4/11/99 was recaptured at CBBT, 1st Island on 5/6/99 (25 DAL).
  3. Cape Charles, VA
Three tautog (12.50, 14.00, 18.50” TL) released off Cape Charles harbor in Oct-Nov 1998 were recaptured near Cherrystone Reef in Apr 1999 (168 DAL) and Oct 1999 (354, 383 DAL).
  4. Westmoreland Wreck
Three tautog (11.75, 14.00, 15.00” TL) released at this site in Feb 1999 were recaptured at the Cape Henry Wreck in Mar 1999 (21-26 DAL).
  • Approximately 4% of tautog recaptured in 1999 were caught at sites ? 10 nm away from sites where these fish were tagged and released.  Significant examples include:

  • More than 30 multiple recapture events of the same tagged tautog were recorded in 1999.  These events document that proper catching, handling, and releasing can result in high survival and is useful in evaluating the effectiveness of minimum size limit restrictions.  Significant examples of multiple recapture events of the same tagged tautog in 1999 include:

  1. Three recapture events for the same tagged tautog
    • A tautog (11.00” TL) tagged at an unnamed wreck 27 nm east of Cape Henry on 4/27/97 was recaptured at the Katy Brown Wreck on 6/26/98 (425 DAL).  This fish was re-released with the tag in place and subsequently recaptured at the Turn of the Century Wreck on 11/20/98 (147 DAL), re-released a second time, then recaptured a third time back at the Katy Brown Wreck on 12/31/99 (406 DAL).  Total days at large between initial release and last recapture was 978.
    • A tautog (12.50” TL) tagged at the Turn of the Century Wreck on 3/31/98 was recaptured at the same site on 4/3/98 (3 DAL).  This fish was re-released with the tag in place and subsequently recaptured again at the same site two more times: 7/3/98 (91 DAL) and 5/31/99 (332 DAL).  Total days at large between initial release and last recapture was 426.
  2. Two recapture events for the same tagged tautog
    • 5 tautog (12-13.50” TL) previously tagged and recaptured in 1997 and 1998 were recaptured for a second time in 1999.  All tautog (initially released at the Concrete Ships, Cape Henry Wreck, Turn of the Century Wreck, and Cape Charles, VA were recaptured for a second time at respective release sites (or within 5 nm of initial release sites) in 1999 (Total DAL = 173, 294, 321, 349, and 526).
    • 25 tautog (9.50-16.50” TL) tagged and released primarily near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay (Cape Henry Wreck, Westmoreland Wreck) and the New Point Comfort Rockpile were recaptured twice in 1999 (0-289 DAL).
