In conjunction with field and laboratory studies, we use outdoor mesocosm tanks to examine how perturbations to the grassbed foodweb affect community structure and functional processes such as primary and secondary production.  Because the dominant herbivores in local grassbeds are small (<1 cm) crustaceans, manipulating their abundance is more reliable in mesocosms than in the field.
