Upper Potomac River (POTTF)
Previous Segment Segment Text Next Segment

Due to flight restrictions following the events of September 11, only 51% of the area mapped for segment POTTF in 2000 was fully mapped in 2001. In 2001, 796.90 ha of SAV were mapped for segment POTTF. This segment accounted 4.5% of SAV in the Middle Bay Zone and 2.5% of the Bay total.

When comparing the same mapped regions for both years, SAV decreased 23% from 808.34 ha in 2000 to 619.45 ha in 2001. The Tier I goal, adjusted to cover just the area mapped both years (653.54 ha), was not met for POTTF.

SAV decreased on the west side of Theodore Roosevelt Island (Map 028); in the area off Washington National Airport, with the loss of SAV beds in the middle of the river off East Potomac Park, off the airport, and north of the mouth of Broad Creek (Map 034); in the bed below the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge (Map 034); and at the mouth of Swan Creek (Map 040).

SAV increased on the western shore below the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge and at the mouth of Broad Creek (Maps 034, 040).

No photography was available for either shore of the Potomac River below Swan Creek (Map 040).
