Note: These instructions are designed for use with the spreadsheet software package Microsoft Excel on an IBM compatible computer.
Objective: To graph a beach profile over four months.
Procedure:
Open the data file "beachdata.txt" in Excel. You will get the Text Import Wizard.
Go to an empty cell, J1 for instance, and click on the
(chart wizard) icon.
Under the Series tab, go to the box listing the different series. Remove from this list all blank series and all Horizontal Distances, leaving only the four elevation series on this list. Hit Next.
To print the graph, go to File then Print Preview to make sure the graph looks right on the page. To make adjustments go to Setup. When the graph is ready, select Print.
To save the spreadsheet and graph, go to File, Save As and change the Save as type to Microsoft Excel Workbook.
Congratulations, you have just graphed the profiles for a beach in Ocean City, MD. At this point, you can refer back to the Bridge data tip for discussion questions and ideas, and for more links on related subjects.
