The Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) was chosen as the symbol for this award because of its impressive stature. This species is the largest of the sea lions, with males reaching over 1700 lbs in weight and 10 ft in length. Steller sea lions can be recognized by their large size, thick neck and heavy "mane" of hair. What's the difference between a seal and a sea lion? Click here to find out. Exemplary or stellar sites on the Bridge can be identified by our Steller sea lion. Steller Sites, like the sea lion itself, are few in number but make a big impression. Steller Sites have been selected as outstanding marine education resources based not only on their content, but also on the overall site design, ease of use and navigability, and appropriate use of web technology.
