Environmental Education Interests:
My goal, as the education coordinator with CBNERRVA, is to engage students (6th grade through college), formal educators and the public with marine science topics and increase understanding of the estuary. We work towards this goal through a variety of programs. CBNERRVA is committed to providing meaningful field experiences for students and our field marine science programs are very popular. We also work to provide oyster restoration workshops for teachers. The Tour of the Reserves program is a way to highlight the four Virginia Reserves and introduce interesting aspects of the Chesapeake Bay to the public. The education program also works to support local classroom teachers when possible.
Please keep an eye out for new programming on the Education tab of the NERRS web page. We will have marine science programs for our new wet-lab / classroom in the Spring of 2005 and summer programs will be advertised by late April if not sooner. We will also have teacher training workshops in the summer of 2005 to provide training in a new water quality curricula for high school students that uses data from the Chesapeake Bay and guides teachers how to use the latest water quality data from the Chesapeake and around the nation in their classroom.
