National Program

NOAA NERRThe National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERR) was established in 1972 under the Coastal Zone Management Act and is administered within the Estuarine Reserves Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). There are currently 25 NERR sites in the United States, encompassing more than one million acres of estuarine habitat in a wide-variety of biogeographic regions. The mission of the Reserves is to promote informed management through linked programs of research, education and land management. Each Reserve is built on a foundation of ongoing partnerships with state, federal and local authorities. Issues of national priority include nonpoint source pollution, habitat restoration, maintenance of biodiversity and control of invasive species, and sustaining estuarine ecosystems.

In addition to the individual Reserve sites and the Estuarine Research Division of NOAA, resources of the National Estuarine Research Reserve system include the Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technologies (CICEET), the Central Data Management Office (CDMO), and NOAA'a Coastal Services Center (CSC).

CICEET CICEET is a partnership between NOAA and the University of New Hampshire. CICEET uses the capabilities of the University of New Hampshire and the NERRS to develop and apply new environmental technologies and techniques to aid in the monitoring, management, and protection of estuaries and coastal waters. CICEET funds research that is problem-driven and solution oriented, fosters collaboration and interdisciplinary work, and emphasizes the effective transfer of technology and information.
CDMO The CDMO is located at the University of South Carolina's Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine Biology and Coastal Research and the North Inlet-Winyah Bay, SC NERR. The purpose of the CDMO is to support and improve the NERRS System-Wide Monitoring Program through all aspects of data and metadata management, maintaining on-line data and information accessibility, and by providing technical support services.
NOAA CSCThe CSC is located in Charleston, South Carolina. It's mission is to foster and sustain the environmental and economic well-being of the coast by linking people, information and technology. Achieving this mission is accomplished by activities in their four divisions: Coastal Information Services, Resources Management Services, Coastal Technology Services and Coastal Management Services. Specific efforts to support the NERRS program include habitat characterization and training in technology, coastal management and process skills.
