During Summer 2006, using larvae from two hatcheries, our industry partners produced over 25 million spat (recently settled oysters). The setting percentage for each of 18 sets accomplished was calculated by estimating the total number of spat produced divided by the total number of larvae placed into the setting tanks. This estimate was obtained from a mean count of the number of spat attached to 100 shells from each set. Spat were deployed to nearby reef locations. Post-Deployment survival describes the number of spat remaining on the reef approximately one week after deployment or planting. Pre-Winter survival was assessed during November/December 2006 and represents the percentage of oysters that survived from deployment until November/December 2006.
