Recruit Abundance at Restoration Sites

The abundance of oyster recruits or spat at restoration sites are quantified twice a month throughout the summer and fall to provide information on the timing and intensity of oyster recruitment to restored habitats. Estimates of spat abundance collected throughout the season are compared with spat abundance estimates observed at the end of the spawning season to provide quantitative estimates of annual spat mortality. Data on spat abundance, mortality, and genetics may be combined with broodstock abundance, fecundity, and genetic data to establish a relationship between broodstock population characteristics and the resulting number and genetic profile of recruits observed in the system. These data may be applied to subsequent restoration projects as part of adapative management strategies.
